In CEM, we are committed to differentiation and personalized education based on each student’s abilities. The Student Performance Analytics tool, developed by Jorge Calvo, Director of Innovation and Data Analysis at our institution, allows for a more comprehensive monitoring of students’ progress, performance, and potential at the end of the school year.
CEM, a leading international private school for students aged 0 to 18, renowned for its innovation and technology in the classroom, has introduced a tool called Student Performance Analytics. This tool enables us to work on student differentiation and provides a more thorough tracking of their progress, performance, and potential.
This innovative project takes into account two important factors for analyzing student performance and visualization. Firstly, we have extracted a database that encompasses the EFAI (Factorial Evaluation of Intellectual Attitudes) tests conducted by our guidance department over the past 8 years. The EFAI tests assess spatial, numerical, abstract reasoning, verbal, and memory aptitudes, and can be administered to students of various ages. For this particular project, students from 2nd grade of Primary Education to 2nd grade of Baccalaureate have been evaluated every two years, specifically in even-numbered academic years, in order to provide a comprehensive overview of each student. Secondly, an analysis of academic grades corresponding to the period when the EFAI tests were conducted has been performed. This analysis aimed to establish a relationship between the subjects that could correlate most strongly with the different areas evaluated in these tests. Based on the descriptors of each area and the input from specialists in the department, it was concluded that the academic grades most correlated with the EFAI factors were Mathematics, Spanish Language, First Foreign Language (English), Science (average of Social Sciences and Natural Sciences), and History.
Thus, the Student Performance Analytics tool, developed by Jorge Calvo, teacher and Director of Technology and Innovation at CEM, in collaboration with Esmeralda Velasco, the school’s guidance counselor, serves to visualize, explain, and describe the data collected in the project. It has been implemented in a web environment to facilitate access and compatibility for the end user.
The tool provides different sections that allow for a detailed analysis of the data from a pedagogical perspective. In the “EFAI Classes” section, a visual analysis of the correlation between the EFAI tests and the academic grades in the aforementioned subjects is conducted. Colors are used to highlight factors or grades that are less favorable for students, enabling the identification of areas for improvement.
In the “Descriptors” section, information and explanations about the different descriptors obtained in the EFAI tests are provided. This section aims to provide context to the end user, who may not be a specialist in the evaluated factors, so that they can understand the meaning of certain behaviors shown in the graphs.
Additionally, a feature called “Predict Grade” has been implemented, which allows teachers to assess, analyze, and objectively understand the academic and personal development of students to a greater degree. A pilot study was conducted with secondary school courses, where teachers provided a predictive grade at the beginning of the year, which was subsequently compared to the actual grade achieved by students, providing additional value for studying their progress.
Jorge Calvo states, “This allows us to make a performance forecast for each student. Starting from their innate abilities, we can estimate their level of achievement and predict their position, their growth range, and what we can do to support them.”
Undoubtedly, this project represents a significant step towards utilizing data to improve education and provide more effective support to teachers in their teaching roles. At CEM, we are dedicated to educational excellence and will continue to innovate to offer quality education tailored to the individual needs of our students.
