An IB Learning Journey
CEM is an IB World School, authorised to offer the Primary Years Programme (PYP) and the Middle Years Programme (MYP). Our educational approach promotes inquiry-based learning, critical thinking and the development of key competencies that prepare students to thrive in an ever-changing global world.
As part of our commitment to providing an outstanding international education, we are currently an IB candidate school* for the Diploma Programme (DP). Once the authorisation process is complete, we will be able to offer the IB continuum of programmes, supporting our students from Early Years through to Sixth Form within the same internationally recognised educational framework.
*Only schools authorised by the International Baccalaureate Organization (IB) can offer any of its four academic programmes. Colegio Europeo de Madrid is authorised to offer the Primary Years Programme (PYP) and the Middle Years Programme (MYP), and is currently a candidate school for the Diploma Programme (DP). Candidate status gives no guarantee that authorisation will be granted. For further information about the IB and its programmes, please visit www.ibo.org.
The Primary Years Programme (PYP)
The PYP focuses on the development of the whole child as an inquirer, both in the classroom and in the world outside. It is a transdisciplinary framework that encourages students to make connections across traditional subject areas through deep, inquiry-based learning.
Driven by student agency and structured around six global themes, our fully authorized PYP sparks natural curiosity, fosters conceptual understanding, and empowers our youngest learners to take meaningful action in their communities.
The Middle Years Programme (MYP)
The MYP provides a challenging, academically rigorous framework that encourages students to make practical connections between their studies and the real world. Our fully authorized programme bridges the primary years and pre-university studies by teaching students how to think critically and reflectively.
Through eight subject groups, global contexts, and the culminating Personal Project, MYP students master foundational academic concepts while developing the essential Approaches to Learning (AtLs) required for future success.
The Diploma Programme (DP) – Candidate School*
The DP is a world-renowned, academically challenging pre-university curriculum designed to prepare students for success at university and life beyond. Through a balanced combination of disciplinary depth and interdisciplinary breadth, students engage with six subject groups alongside the DP "Core":
the Extended Essay (EE), Theory of Knowledge (TOK), and Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS). As an official candidate school, we are actively preparing to deliver this prestigious pathway, ensuring our senior students graduate as highly articulate, analytical, and globally-competitive thinkers.
*Disclaimer: Colegio Europeo de Madrid is a candidate school for the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme and is pursuing authorization as an IB World School. Candidate status gives no guarantee that authorization will be granted.
